What is the Community Garden?

•The
garden will be built of composite wood and
non-toxic loam. It will be watered from a
cistern connected to the school roof and be fed
via drip irrigation.
•It
will be constructed by volunteer parent labor
under the supervision of David Gass, who has
worked in construction for 24 years and built
40+ homes. It will be managed by the school
staff, with advice from The Food Project.
•Two
phases of agriculture utilized are food
production and sales at a Farmer’s Market.
Ninety percent of the garden will be used to
produce food - local crops as well as vegetables
representative of the families - Cambodian,
Latin American, and African.
•Students
will learn about agriculture and the
marketplace. Science and math skills, along with
geography and history, will be enhanced e.g.,
many of the Cambodian and Guatemalan families
were farmers and will relate their experiences
to their children.
